Happy New Year! Let’s Get A Fresh Start.
Albert Einstein said it well… “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”
One good thing about “change” is that it isn’t necessary to change everything all at once to begin getting different results.
Let’s say:
a) A compulsive spender piddles away $500 per month but decides to begin saving $10 per month… they are still piddling away $490 every month but at least it is less than before and are now at least saving something.
b) Someone with a weight problem typically gains 3 pounds a month makes a small change in the amount they eat and decides to start walking 10 minutes a day… they go from gaining 3 pounds a month to only 2 pounds a month. They are still gaining weight but not as fast and are now getting exercise.
c) A person with constant anxiety decides to take 10 minutes a day to clear their mind, focus on what they have to be thankful for and live in the moment. They still have anxiety most of the day but now have a “happy place” to look forward to daily.
In most any situation like the ones above it takes us a considerable amount of time to get to where we are and it will also take a considerable amount of time to end up someplace else.
No one wakes up one morning 20 pounds overweight. No one wakes up one morning with a new addictive behavior. No one wakes up one morning with an anxiety disorder.
Look at yourself through “kind eyes”… be gracious with yourself and cut yourself a break.
Don’t expect a full 180 degree turnaround in one day.
Set a small achievable goal and when you eventually complete it than reward yourself.
From this point on try to look at what you’ve achieved (although it may seem insignificant) instead of what you have left to achieve.
Be thankful for your accomplishment and set another small goal.
Don’t give up… you can do it!
Have a Happy New Year filled with a series of small successfully achieved goals.
