The Anxiety Proximity Factor… What a Downer!

The Anxiety Proximity Factor

Woke up this morning with the song “Good Feeling” by Flo Rida looping through my head…

I just had to put it on… crank it up… and enjoy the buzz!

It’s cool when certain things can touch our soul and give us a “pick up” in our spirit.

Unfortunately most of us have far more “downer” triggers than “pick up” triggers.

Thus the “Anxiety Proximity Factor” term I coined…

When a young child is going down the playground slide for the first time they want to be in close proximity to their mom or dad… this gives them a sense of security and confidence.

When a child comes in contact with a stranger it often causes anxiety, fear and uncertainty…

There is so much we can learn from children.

Simple concept really… what do you allow to be in close proximity to yourself?

The Anxiety Proximity Factor…Carefully Consider What

  • Books you read
  • Magazines you subscribe to
  • TV shows and movies you watch
  • Friends you hang out with
  • You do with your spare time
  • Your home environment is like
  • Your attitude towards your job is
  • Media you allow into your mind

If the books you read leave you craving romance, adventure, fame and wealth and ultimately feeling empty and lacking this is contributing to your anxiety and can be minimized with a shift in proximity….

Pick up a self help book…not as exciting I know but… if it helps ground you in reality and increases inner peace isn’t that more “exciting” in the long run?

If there are certain friends when after you’re with them you find yourself being negative, agitated and stressed than find some new friends. This may sound harsh but isn’t your peace of mind worth it? After you have developed some strength in your mental health you can get back in touch with these people and be a positive model for them instead of allowing them to take you to their level.

Does watching the disasters in the news cause you panic attacks? Then don’t watch it… if something that REALLY matters happens I’m sure someone will mention it to you.

Begin to take notice of the things you do, the places you go, the people you are in contact with and how it makes you feel. Of course we can’t lock ourselves away… I am not talking about hiding but rather making positive change.

Think of it as “exchanging” not as “giving up”.

Don’t feel the need to necessarily do a clean sweep and start over, most will find it much more comfortable and sustainable if you pick one item at a time and slowly implement all the various areas you want to address.

Consider the Anxiety Proximity Factor today… what are you allowing to be close?
