Anxiety and Expectations…
Much mental suffering is tied to our false expectations.
We may so link our hopes and joys and future to a new job, to a promotion,
or to certain kinds of success, to prosperity, that when they fail to materialize,
we are utterly crushed.
~ DA Carson
Anxiety and expectations often goes hand in hand.
It’s easy to live life expecting certain outcomes in our finances, relationships and careers all the while being anxious about whether it will come to pass and then if they do not turn out as anticipated our anxiety changes focus to our uncertain (and disillusioned) future.
Many, after a number of disappointments give up reaching for anything bigger than what they know they can comfortably accomplish and no longer set any goals or chase their dreams.
The key to the quote above is NOT to stop…
- reaching for the sky
- setting goals
- believing in the impossible
- expecting what we are hoping for will actually come to pass
The key is to not tie our happiness to the outcome.
This is where anxiety and expectations feed off each other.
It’s ok (and even good) to set goals, dream big, plan for, work for, and expect to accomplish our goals but as soon as we allow ourselves to think achieving these goals will make us happy we are pretty much doomed to failure.
The moment you understand and truly believe happiness comes from within and who you are and NOT from your circumstances, bank balance, social status or how many friends you have on Facebook is the first big step away from a life of anxiety into a life of freedom and inner peace.
Chase after your dreams with everything within and be happy about achieving them if you do but choose to be happy along the way and to continue to be so if you fall short of your goal.
Begin today breaking the tie between anxiety and expectations.
